Dundee & Fife
Dundee
Dundee, city of Discovery, is only 1 ½ miles from
Newport-on-Tay across the road bridge . The fourth
largest city in Scotland, it is undergoing something of a regeneration
following the collapse in recent years of the jute trade, shipyard
closure, and failure of heavy industry A large student
population gives a buzz, Dundee University’s biomedical
departments have a worldwide reputation, while Abertay University’s
new library recently won a major architectural award. A
nascent cultural quarter is developing around the repertory theatre,
with numerous nightclubs, the award winning Contemporary Arts
Centre, and
Sensation, the striking science centre building
Activities
The Olympia Leisure Centre swimming pools include one
of olympic length , together with a diving area, water
chutes, turkish baths, saunas, and fitness centre.
Dundee’s shopping centre is both compact and comprehensive,
and includes two fine malls. There are two multi-screen
cinemas, two theatres including the excellent rep (a good place
to eat incidentally), and a museum. In the harbour, Captain
Scott’s ship “Discovery “ and the centuries
old wooden walled frigate “Unicorn” are open to
visitors.
The District of Fife
The “kingdom” of Fife, that “beggar’s
mantle fringed with gold”, lies between the estuaries of
the rivers Forth and Tay, with Edinburgh to the south and Dundee
to the north. Pleasant rolling country runs down to the quaint
old fishing villages of the East Neuk, bordering the Forth.
St Andrews, probably most famous for golf, has a wealth of historical
buildings, including the second oldest university in Britain. Some
fifty golf courses lie within fifty miles.
Good trout fishing is plentiful in local rivers and lochs, Loch
Leven for example is only twenty odd miles away. Sea
fishing trips can be made from several local harbours.
In the surrounding area, many historic buildings are open to visitors,
Falkland Palace, Scone Palace, and Glamis Castle being examples.
Four miles away, Tentsmuir Forest offers woodland walks, six miles
of sandy beaches, and nature reserves with a picnic area and
car parks. For the really energetic, the new Fife
Coastal path runs from the Forth Bridge to the Tay Bridge. In
excess of 100 miles, and regarded as a seven day exercise, it
is never far from a bus route.
